I'm looking forward to contributing to this blog in whatever meaningful way I can. As a sort of introductory and celebratory post, see http://www.ushistory.org/declaration/document/, a copy of the Declaration of Independence. This July 4th, I've decided that I'm going to make a tradition of reading the document and encourage others to do the same. Two parts I think are especially important:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
The first quote is often taken out of context, in particular "that all men are created equal." It should be noted that all men are not equal in nature, but do have equal rights under the law, and society should strive to preserve equality of opportunity and treatment, not equality of outcome. The second quote reminds us of the sacrifice of the Founding Fathers, many whom lost both family and fortune for their dream of a free and just society.
